Before founding Go-Jek, Nadiem worked at Kartuku as Chief Innovation Officer from April 2013 to March 2014. As CIO, he was responsible for devising new product strategy, doing market analysis, forming strategic alliances, etc. Prior to that, he joined Zalora Indonesia as Managing Director from November 2011 to August 2012. Apart from that, from August 2006 to March 2009, he worked as an Associate at McKinsey & Company.
Go-Jek’s Makarim attended Brown University to do BA in International Relations and Affairs from 2002 to 2006. In 2009, he took admission at Harvard Business School for MBA.

Nadiem (age 34) embarked on many ventures, but only Go-Jek proved to be successful for him. An idea of starting this company came to him from his extensive traveling experience in bike taxis Ojeks in Indonesia. Since he could not totally rely on them, he used to hire taxis also for food buying or courier delivery services. That prompted him to explore opportunities in this area. He began with a call center to help ojek drivers to provide on-demand transport services to customers.
As an aside, Anthony Tan, who owns GrabTaxi, is an arch rival of Nadiem in the bike taxi market. However, before that, they are friends from Harvard. When GrabTaxi was launched, Tan had a total of 250 million USD funding with him, while Nadiem’s Go-Jek had only 2 million USD fund.
