Before joining the roles of the Chairman and CEO at the company, McMullen was operating as President and COO of Kroger from 2009 to 2013. In 2003, he became the Vice Chairman. Earlier in 2000, he took the position of Executive Vice President for Strategy, Planning, and Finance. In 1999, he was the CFO and Executive VP, and prior to that, in 1997, he was Senior VP of the company. In 1995, he headed the company as Group VP and CFO. In 1993, he was given charge of Control and Financial Services division as Vice President. In 1989, he served Planning and Capital Management department as VP. His career with Kroger took off in 1978 when he joined it as a stock clerk part-time.
He attended the University of Kentucky to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Accounting.
