In December 2020 the company announced that they raised 660 million USD in an extension of Series J round of funding, valuing Zomato at 3.9 billion USD. Tiger Global, Kora, Luxor, Fidelity (FMR), D1 Capital, Baillie Gifford, Mirae, and Steadview were the new investors who participated in this round. Deepinder Goyal started his food tech company in July 2008 with Pankaj Chaddah, his colleague from consulting firm Bain & Company. Back then Zomato was named Foodiebay.com. However, to avoid legal issues with e-commerce giant eBay, Deepinder in 2010 renamed the company as it is known today.
Zomato’s journey began as a search engine for restaurants where people could check the menu of nearby eateries. The idea of this venture struck Deepinder when he was working for the consulting firm Bain & Company. During office lunch he noticed that people were looking for takeaway menus to order food from. Realizing that there was a gap that he could fill, he started Foodiebay.com, eventually leaving his cushy consulting job that he had joined in 2006.

Deepinder (age 37) hails from a small town called Muktsar, near Bathinda in Punjab. His father was a Botany teacher and mother taught English. From there on, he started taking his studies seriously and was able to pass the IIT-JEE entrance in his first attempt.
