Deepinder Goyal started his food tech company in July 2008 with Pankaj Chaddah, his colleague from consulting firm Bain & Company. Back then Zomato was named Foodiebay.com. However, to avoid legal issues with e-commerce giant eBay, Deepinder in 2010 renamed the company as it is known today.
Zomato’s journey began as a search engine for restaurants where people could check the menu of nearby eateries. The idea of this venture struck the Zomato owner when he was working for the consulting firm Bain & Company. During office lunch he noticed that people were looking for takeaway menus to order food from. A shy person, he was not as academically brilliant as his elder brother was.
